Choosing a material

Wood, composite, vinyl or metal?

Most people arrive knowing what they want the fence to do, not what they want it made of. Here is the short version of each, including the part a salesperson usually leaves out.

Horizontal cedar fence boards mounted on black steel posts along a side yard, with a black gravel bed and paver walkway beside it

Wood

Warmth, value and full privacy

Cedar or pressure-treated pine, in horizontal or traditional vertical styles. The least expensive route to a solid six-foot screen, and the only material you can restain any color you like.

Trade-off: Wants a stain or sealer every few years to keep its color.

Wood fences

Composite

A wood look with nothing to maintain

Wood-and-polymer planks that slot into aluminum or steel posts. Holds its grain and color, wipes clean, and will not rot, splinter or cup.

Trade-off: Costs more per foot up front than wood.

Composite fences
White vinyl privacy fence panels running down a grass side yard between two brick buildings, with a brown composite gate at the far end

Vinyl / PVC

A bright white line that washes clean

Tongue-and-groove panels locked into routed posts, with no fasteners showing and the same finished face on both sides of the fence.

Trade-off: Panel wall thickness matters — thin vinyl gets brittle in the cold.

Vinyl / PVC fences
Black steel fence with welded wire mesh panels and a matching walk gate, installed along the concrete gangway of a red brick two-flat

Metal

Strength, security and an open view

Powder-coated steel pickets, welded wire mesh panels and ornamental iron. Takes up almost no visual space and can bolt straight to concrete.

Trade-off: Open by design — it secures a yard rather than screening it.
